Golden Farm 'Week of Action' Kicks Off Sunday
Workers' fight for unpaid back-wages goes into high gear.
, and with the help of New York Communities for Change, they're taking action.
After months of planning, workers and concerned community members alike will join forces on Sunday to kick off a Week of Action, a series of events designed to raise awareness for the plight of the Kensington grocery store's employees, who until recently were paid only $4.86 an hour for 72-hour weeks.
Though Golden Farm owner Sonny Kim has since started paying his workers a legal wage, he reportedly has yet to compensate them for the time they were underpaid.

Monday, April 23rd, 5pm: Screening of “The Take” by Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein. We will meet for a rally at Golden Farm, highlighting our successful campaign at Monster Food last year. Then at 6:45 p.m. we will head over to P.S. 179 (202 Ave. C) to watch and discuss the documentary.
Tuesday, April 24, 5:30 pm: Teach-In at the E4th Community Garden (179 E4th St between Ft. Hamilton Parkway and Caton Ave). Discussion of similar labor campaigns and wage theft by Dr. Immanuel Ness of Brooklyn College, and Tsedeye Grebreselassie of the National Employment Law Project. Around 6:45 we will head over to Golden Farm for a demonstration.
Wednesday, April 25, 6:30pm: Protest at Sonny Kim’s Houses. Yes, he has several that he rotates between. Meet at Golden Farm at 6:30 p.m. and we will travel together. His main house is in New Jersey where his neighbors have no idea about this issue, and he can escape the conflict. We are going to bus over together and bring the fight to his home. He also has a house in Kensington, so for those who can’t make the trip to Jersey, there will be a local rally.
Thursday, April 26, 7pm: Community Potluck and Sign-Making Party at P.S. 230. Come get to know your neighbors, the workers and NYCC staff better over dinner. This would be a good event for those of you with kids. We will have an arts station set up to make signs, and everyone should bring some food to share.
Friday, April 27, 7pm: Inter-Faith Vigil outside Golden Farm. We are working to bring in congregations from all different faiths to highlight the universal nature of workers struggles. If you know an interested congregation, we are setting up times when a worker can speak with the group directly.
Saturday, April 28: 24-Hour Boycott and Picket. We will have a presence outside the store all day and night, but the main gathering will be from 12-5 p.m. We have a set of speakers lined up, music, activities and food, so come and bring as many people as you can. Contact NYCC if you want to sign up for an hour of picketing. We will try to have at least 20 people at all times.
