Prospect Park's roads are in for an overhaul.

Prospect Park's roads are in for an overhaul.

The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and the NYC Department of Transportation have finalized the plans recommended by the Prospect Park Road Sharing Taskforce to make the roads safer and easier to navigate.

On Friday, May 11, DOT will begin implementing "phase one actions," which will include removing existing stripes and icons and begin repainting the lanes with new designations and icons, including high visibility crosswalks.

DOT has already repainted lane markings and symbols on the Park Drive between the Park Circle and Parkside and Ocean Avenue entrances. DOT will repaint the rest of Park Drive beginning Friday. The work is expected to be completed by late May.

The crosswalk at Wellhouse Drive and West Drive, near the Vanderbilt Playground, will be widened from 12 feet to 25 feet.

DOT has places electronic message boards at Grand Army Plaza, Park Circle and Ocean/Parkside Avenue to indicate road work is in progress.

New signs will be placed around the park to indicate proper lane usage, and new rule cards will be distributed by volunteers around the Park. After the new rules are in effect, NYPD and PEP will continue enforcement of the Park Drive rules.

In Fall 2012, the Road Sharing Taskforce will reconvene to review Phase I Actions and consider Phase II Actions.
