Weiner's Downfall Now a Greek Tragedy, Sort Of

New York Times interviews troupe reliving this summer's scandal.

Former mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner's rise and fall and rise and fall was always the stuff of high drama — it's just surprising that it took less than two months for that drama to hit an actual stage.

According to a New York Times story published Tuesday, a theater troupe at Hunter College wasted no time in taking the exploits of the one-time mayoral frontrunner and turning them into a Greek tragedy — and you can help make it a reality.

The Weiner Monologues (har har) is on track to open for audiences early next month, and its got an Indiegogo account that will allow theater lovers (or Anthony Weiner-haters) to invest in everything from costumes to the performance space. The group putting up the show is already well on its way to funding its modest $2,500 goal.

According to the Times, the production is a series of vignettes created from Weiner's own speeches, texts and more.

"It explores the tension between what is private and what is public in this day and age," Director Jonathan Harper Schlieman told the paper. "A sex scandal is a great point of entry into that."

The Weiner Monologues joins an exhibit at the Museuem of Sex that prominently features a Facebook exchange the former Congressman had with a Las Vegas blackjack dealer.
