Church Avenue BID Seeks Volunteers for Pre-Thanksgiving Cooking Clinic

Volunteers will learn to make local chef David Sheridan's own family recipes.

Love food? Love Church Avenue?

The Church Avenue Business Improvement District and local chef David Sheridan are looking for volunteers to cook pre-Thanksgiving meals for the Flatbush Reformed Church's soup kitchen.

Those interested will be helping to prepare a feast for up to 100 Flatbush residents in need, using recipes from Sheridan's family.

Volunteers are also needed to donate desserts and home-made table decorations.

Sheridan's own restaurant, a gourmet pizza joint and cocktail lounge called Wheated, is slated to open soon on Church Avenue near Coney Island Avenue.

The event will be held on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Nov. 17 as part of the BID's new program, From Roti to Rhubarb: The Food of Church Avenue.

Volunteers are needed in three shifts: For four hours on Nov. 16 (specific time to be determined) and on Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The cooking class is just the first of Roti to Rhubarb's events, said BID executive director Lauren Elvers Collins. In addition to planning another cooking class to be held in January, the BID will also soon issue a Church Avenue food directory.

Those interested should email the BID at info@churchavenue.org with their name, phone number and preferred shift.
