Closing Prospect Park to Cars

City Councilmember Gale Brewer of Manhattan has introduced a bill to keep cars out of Prospect Park, as well as the main loop inside Central Park. But local politicians worry drivers in the neighborhoods around Prospect Park would face more congestion. reports:

Community Board 6 has been in support of closing Prospect Park to cars for a six-month trial period since the idea was floated in the 1990s. But Community Boards 14 and 7, which cover Windsor Terrace and Ditmas Park have both raised objections because of traffic concerns, said Craig Hammerman, Community Board 6 District Manager. Prospect Heights’ Community Board 8, has not taken an official position.

In the new proposal, cars would still be able to enter Prospect Park on Ocean Avenue and drive to the Wollman Rink parking lot.

A similar bill failed in 2006, but resulted in restricting cars from the park except for rush hour. For now, the main Prospect Park loop is open to cars from 7 to 9am and 5 to 7pm daily.
