Next Year? A Sponsoring Organization for NYC Playstreets
Next Year? A Sponsoring Organization for NYC Playstreets
Tomorrow is the deadline for applications for Playstreets, a collaboration between Department of Transportation and Department of Health:
"While awaiting the completion of New York City’s next batch of parks and playgrounds, the Departments of Health & Mental Hygiene, Transportation, and Parks have created Playstreets to jumpstart the childhood obesity epidemic immediately. Playstreets allows communities to open up their streets to pedestrians for play on a recurrent basis. It is a quick and low-cost way to create active play space and is a health measure that directly targets our city’s most important at–risk population—children."
At the Ditmas Park blog, readers are busily nominating additional streets to be included. The sponsor is Sustainable Flatbush, who will supervise the play areas.
This might be one way to get an official soccer field on 36th Street, and cricket and soccer fields near Dome Playground. I'm sure there are other areas in Kensington that would welcome playstreets too. What we lack is a Sustainable Flatbush, or other sponsoring organization, to supervise or file the applications. And until we have such an organization many good ideas for Kensington will die aborning.
