Walgreen's Sweets Sales and Our Health

Walgreen's aggressive promotion of candy sales conflicts with their message of concern for our health. It is damaging especially to children who are easily wooed by these promotions.

Walgreen's, at Church and McDonald, heavily promotes candies in its store. There is extensive shelving devoted to candy near the front of the store where most customers pass. There are frequent sales. This intentional effort to woo customers, with candy and especially young children who scan these shelves with longing in their eyes and pleas to their parents, conflicts with the company's core message about concern over our health. It is especially damaging for the South Asians who make up a considerable portion of our neighborhood and are highly susecptible to diabetes from sugary foods.

I have wirtten the company about this and spoken to the local managers, but to no effect.

While there are issues with the Rite Aid on Church and E. 3rd as well, the store's promotions usually feature discounted paper products, cereals and laundry detergents, a better diet for families.
