5 Things: Subways Running to Manhattan and Post-Sandy Volunteering

What you need to know today in a post-Sandy world.

1. Trains are now running to Manhattan. The 4, 5, 7 and J lines were running to Manhattan, with the 4 and 5 trains making local stops in Brooklyn. Although the MTA had said that F and lines would be fully restored on Saturday, as of midnight that hadn't happened. Click link for more subway information.

2. Volunteers and donations still needed for Sandy victims. Here's a fairly up-to-date list of shelters that need volunteers over the weekend, items that are needed, and local donation drop-off points. If you have additional information or updates, please add it in the comments. People who can deliver items, either because they have gas or a plug-in hybrid, are especially needed.

3. The gas shortage could go on for days. In a press briefing Saturday, Mayor Bloomberg noted that just because more gas is coming to the city doesn't mean you're going to get any before Monday, even if you have the hours to spare to wait on line. That plug-in hyprid is looking pretty good right now.

4. Schools will be open Monday, closed Tuesday. New York City public schools are reopening Monday, but are closed Tuesday for Election Day. However there are 65 schools that can't open, either because of storm damage or because they are housing shelters (Brooklyn Tech will be open, sharing space with the shelter). Mayor Bloomberg said that he expects many more schools to open Wednesday. Parents and students can find about their school at the Department of Education’s website, by calling 311, by texting the words ‘NYCSchools’ to 877-877.

5. Garbage will be picked up, but not recycling. According to the Department of Sanitation, they are picking up garbage as best they can, but won't pick up recycling until further notice.

Last time I checked, the 4,5,7 and J lines don't serve Ditmas Park. Was this written just to make DP residents jealous?

You can take the Q to Atlantic and switch to the 4 or 5.
