After Win, de Blasio Outlines Progressive Vision For NYC

Mayor-elect thanks family, supporters after landslide victory.

Democrat Bill de Blasio became mayor-elect of New York City Tuesday night, securing a projected landslide victory over Republican Joe Lhota.

At a victory party at the Park Slope Armory, de Blasio outlined his vision for a progressive New York City in front of a cheering crowd and allied Democratic legislators.

"The people of this city have chosen a progressive path, and tonight we set forth on it, together, as one city," de Blasio said to cheers. "Our work — all of our work — is really just beginning.  And we have no illusions about the task that lies ahead."

De Blasio also referenced his campaign's theme, the struggle against New York as "A Tale of Two Cities."

"I’ve spoken often about 'A Tale of Two Cities.' That inequality – that feeling of a few doing very well, while so many slip further behind – that is the defining challenge of our time," he said.  "Because inequality in New York is not something that only threatens those who are struggling."

Republican Joe Lhota, in his concession, defended his idea that the city was unified, not divided, but congratulated de Blasio nonetheless.

In other citywide races, Letitia James claimed victory in the race for the public advocate's office, and Scott Stringer became the next comptroller. James, a democrat, was running unopposed by a Republican candidate. Stringer handily defeated his GOP rival after dispensing with former Governor Eliot Spitzer in the primary.

Before midnight Tuesday, de Blasio was on pace for a victory by a margin of nearly 50 percentage points, according to the New York Times, greater even than polling projections.
