Bill de Blasio Paints Bloomberg, Opponents with One Broad Brush

Public advocate attempting to tie Bloomberg to mayoral contenders.

Mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio is working overtime to find a line of attack that will work for him, not only against Christine Quinn, but also Anthony Weiner and Bill Thompson.

All three currently lead de Blasio in most polls, meaning he's got to hustle to find ways to close the gap.

On Monday, his method, as has often been the case lately, was to try and cast the entire lot as stand-ins for Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It is, for all but Quinn at least, a fairly tough sell.

There is famously no love lost between Bloomberg and Weiner — who in the past has said the mayor was his one and only target of a proposed citywide billionaires tax — and Thompson, who ran against Bloomberg in 2009.

In a post on his website Monday, de Blasio's campaign posted a petition castigating Bloomberg for possibly using his own personal wealth to try and tank the Community Safety Act. The post called the practice "anti-democratic deja vu," in an attempt to equate it with Bloomberg's successful effort to secure a third mayoral term.

As Politicker pointed out, it's not something that Bloomberg has expressly promised to do just yet, answering questions on the topic with a vague "we'll see."

What do you think? Is de Blasio right to slam Bloomberg and his opponents with the same line of attack? Or is this just the public advocate playing politics?
