City to Expand Brooklyn Bridge Park

Development will add new features along John Street in DUMBO.

The Parks Department and Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday that they have approved a plan to expand Brooklyn Bridge Park, while creating a new residential building on John Street in DUMBO.

The park addition's construction will be concurrent with the creation of a residential building in the area, that will include retail space partly taken up by the Brooklyn Children's Museum.

According to the city, the project will add 1.5 acres of parkland to Brooklyn Bridge Park, including features like tree-lined walking paths with bridges over a saltwater marsh and an open lawn.

The residential building will have 47 apartments, which, along with the retail space, will help pay for the maintenance of the park itself. The site was formerly owned and maintained by ConEd.

“Brooklyn Bridge Park has quickly become one of our city’s favorite parks, attracting visitors who enjoy its innovative design, new amenities and breathtaking views," said Bloomberg. "New parkland and residential development at John Street will allow the park to grow and continue to thrive as one of the highlights of our city’s new green waterfront."

The project is expected to be finished in 2015.

Currently, Brooklyn Bridge Park is 85 acres, stretching across more than three miles of the west-Brooklyn shoreline.
