Should There Be Armed Police at All NYC Schools?

The NRA called for gun-carrying "good guys" to guard our children. Good idea?

Friday Morning, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT, and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools.

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

"We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said Friday. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American family, our children, we as a society leave them every day utterly defenseless, and the monsters and the predators of the world know it, and exploit it."

Currently New York City public schools are guarded by unarmed "peace officers" who are part of the NYPD. They carry handcuffs and have the power to arrest and also are in direct radio contact with the police department. However, they do not wear bulletproof vests or guns.

Some schools also have armed police officers, and 88 have metal detectors. All precincts have a school unit that patrols all the schools in its area.

What to you think? Should there be armed police officers at every New York City public school?

I totally agree with the NRA, more laws will only hinder law abiding citizens and do nothing to deter criminals and deranged individuals from causing harm. Laws are only obeyed by the law abiding.

Look at Israel, every school there has an armed security guard and Teachers have arms there have been only about 8 killings in schools there in 10 years and in the US over 325 killings Granted the total amount of schools is differnt but the point is proven that having the fact of an armed guard decreases incidents to a point thought is a factor in doing such a horrible deed.

I can't believe that people are actually falling for the NRA "party line." If Lanza's mother hadn't had guns in the house, along with her deranged son, Newtown would not have taken place. A single, armed police officer in a school will have no impact, whatsoever. One-half of the total guns in the entire world are here in the US; that's the problem.

... So lets do both.....lets get the guns, particularly automatic weapons off the streets AND lets put armed police in every school!

As a former NYC School saftery peace officer that worked in the very high crime schools and presently a NYC Police Officer that worked in the school task force unit, I can tell you first hand that its all about Gun control!!. School are too large, with many exists, at times its gangs outside and gangs inside ,weapons outside and weapons inside. Even with metal detectors, weapons still get in,either by waiting for after hours programs and then setting aside the weapons keeping it hidden for the right moment. In NYC where there thousands of schools and a shortage of Police, we can't be fixed at one post, the Police are always dealing with something and that's usually when other incident's happen. Unlike Long island ,Upstate and other outside counties, NYC has strict gun polices but the state in general ,let alone the country,,guns and high power guns still get in. Where there's money that can be made and no accountabilty, there will be guns for sale in the wrong hands.

I THINK NOW THERE NEEDS TO BE ARMED POLICE IN SCHOOLS. BECAUSE OF THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF THESE SHOOTINGS IT NECESSARY. THE MENTALLY ILL OR TERRORIST NOW SEE VIA MEDIA THAT THIS IS A WAY TO GET US WHERE IT HURTS. I BELIEVE IF THERE HAD NOT BE SO MUCH MEDIA COVERAGE WE WOULD NOT SEE ALL THESE SHOOTINGS. OTHER COUNTRIES MONITOR WHAT IS SEEN AND HEARD VIA MEDIA WE DO NOT. ALSO JUST A NOTE IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN WHO ARE MENTALLY ILL. DO KEEP GUNS IN THE HOUSE NOT TEACH THEM TO DRIVE, SHOOT GUNS, KARATE. THINGS THAT WILL MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM TO HURT OTHERS. IF YOU HAVE A MENTALLY ILL PERSON IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD YOU SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET A GUN. THAT SHOULD BE SOMETHING QUESTIONED WHEN APPLYING FOR A PERMIT.

The fewer guns available, especially high capacity weapons designed solely for warfare, means that there will be fewer guns used by deranged persons to slaughter innocents uninvolved in their problems; real or self imagined.

Like there is no derange teachers in the world...we all human beings with problems and you never know who will be the next to snap...a arm peace police in the school will be okay...teachers with guns...hell no.

There were two armed guards at Columbine. Schools have numerous doorways to the street / campus for fire safety reasons. Make owning an assault weapon very expensive. Make it illegal to sell any more assault rifles and have a mandatory requirement of a 5 million dollar insurance requirement for each weapon. No insurance would then be a felony, punishable by a minimum 3 yrs jail. Enact this legislation in 2013, effective 2014. This would be enforced by "if you see something, say something" with a reward for those persons who "out" an assault rifle owner that is not insured, thus not legally registered with law enforcement. Finally, take the profit out of violent video games, tone down violent movies and make senseless murder as popular as smoking cigarettes in public spaces by linking senseless violence to a depressing lifestyle. Senseless violence today is to "sexy".

How about just enforcing the thousands of existing gun laws, and why is NYACLU still trying to get school safety out of NYC schools
