Brooklyn Prospect Charter School celebrated its move to a permanent home with a ribbon cutting Monday.
The school opened Sept. 7 with about 300 students attending 6th through 9th grades. Brooklyn Prospect will add a grade a year until it includes a full High School in 2015.
The school was founded in 2009 but has led a nomadic existence, renting space first at Sunset Park High School and later, Bishop Ford, before signing a 20-year lease on the former Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
Last March, the Department of Education suggested that it move into P.S. 32 in Carroll Gardens, but the community opposed it.
“This new school building is a major step for us and one that deepens our roots in the community,” said Daniel Rubenstein, BPCS’s co-founder and executive director in a written statement. “We set out to create a high performing school that prepares a diverse group of children for success in a global world. Providing that education in a welcoming, state of the art environment is key to accomplishing our mission, and we are extraordinarily pleased to have this wonderful new home.”
Brooklyn Prospect spent $1.5 million renovating the former catholic school, located at 3002 Fort Hamilton Pkwy. The 60,000 square foot campus features new classrooms, a full-size gymnasium, outdoor space, wireless internet, and a library.
According to Brooklyn Prospect, the school received more than a thousand applications for its lottery last week, vying for 140 available seats.
