Get Down and Derby at Greenwood Playground

A new session of Derby Fit will kick off in April.

The Friends of Greenwood Playground want you to know two things: Exercise doesn't have to be boring, and roller derby doesn't have to end with broken bones.

Sign-ups are now underway for a new season of Derby Fit, a roller skating workout class led by Gotham Girls Roller Derby coach Ariel Assault. Ms. Assault knows the ropes: According to her bio, she skated with the Brooklyn Bombshells from 2005 until 2008, and was a member of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby All-Stars from 2005 to 2006.

Derby Fit is a fun and challenging total body workout for skaters of all levels based on drills adapted from the sport of roller derby. A typical Derby Fit class consists of 10-15 minutes of jogging and dynamic movement to warm up, followed by land drills to build the muscles used in skating. Then skates are put on for 1 - 1.5 hours of skating drills. All drills are non contact and focus on skating fundamentals and cardio endurance. No skating skills required, but you do need to be able to get around the track without holding onto anything. DerbyFit skaters can expect to build strength, get fit and have a great time doing it!

Classes will be held weekend mornings for two hours beginning in April. All sessions are held at the Greenwood Playground baseball field at East 5th Street and Ft. Hamilton Parkway.
