Key Food to Lock Up for the Last Time in June

Windsor Terrace residents are going to have to find a new place to get their groceries: On June 30, on Prospect Avenue will be closing its doors, to be replaced in short order by the pharmacy mega-chain, Walgreens. 

The deal closed early last week, the store's manager, Mike Jording, told Patch on Thursday, following the retirement of the Key Food's 80-year-old majority owner. 

"It's bittersweet," said Jording, who lives on Long Island but has worked at Key Food locally since 1978. 

Jording said he is currently working to find alternate employment for the store's roughly 50 employees, ideally at other Key Foods in the area. He said he's unsure whether Walgreens plans to hire from among the soon-to-be unemployed workers. 

Despite his decades-long tenure at Key Food, Jording's own future is every bit as uncertain as his employees'. 

"I'm out of a job myself," he said.
